Nitick helps you meet the people you cross paths with. That only works if you can trust us with your information, so this page explains in plain language what we collect, why, who can see it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.

1. The short version

2. Who we are

Nitick (“we”, “us”) is operated by [[COMPANY LEGAL NAME]], [[COMPANY ADDRESS]]. We decide how and why your personal data is used, so we are the “controller” for the Nitick Android app and this website. You can reach us at [[CONTACT EMAIL]] or through our contact form.

3. What we collect

Your account

Your email address and a password. Our sign-in provider stores the password in scrambled (hashed) form, so we cannot read it. Each account also gets a random account ID.

Your profile

A nickname and an icon, plus anything you choose to add: a photo, a short bio, your Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, X or LinkedIn name, a phone number, a WhatsApp number or an email address to show on your profile. Each detail has its own setting: Public (people you cross paths with can see it) or Friends only. Everything except the nickname and icon is optional.

People you cross paths with

While the radar is on, your phone broadcasts a short anonymous ID that changes every 15 minutes, together with your nickname and icon, and notes the IDs of other Nitick phones it hears. On your phone we keep a history of these sightings (the anonymous ID, when it was first and last heard, how many times, and how strong the signal was).

When you are signed in and online, the app sends our server (a) your upcoming anonymous IDs, so other people's phones can recognise you later, and (b) the sightings your phone recorded, so the server can work out which accounts you crossed. We keep the result: which two accounts crossed, when it started and ended, and how many sightings there were. We do not know where it happened.

Connections and in-person friends

Requests, accepted friendships, blocks, and, for friends you add in person over Bluetooth, a public key created on your phone (the private key never leaves your phone) and a confirmation that two phones met.

Messages and files

The text, photos and voice notes you send, with reactions, replies, time stamps and whether they were delivered or read. A “typing” signal is passed to your friend while you type but is not stored. Chat works online only.

Notifications

A notification token for your phone, so we can tell it that a message or request is waiting. The notification message itself carries no message text; your phone fetches the content from us.

Reports

If someone reports a person or a message, we store the report, the reason given, and a copy of the reported message and the ones around it so we can review it. The person reported is not told who reported them.

Diagnostics (you can switch this off)

Crash reports, performance measurements and simple usage events (for example, which screen opened, or how long syncing took), collected with Google Firebase and linked to your random account ID. They include technical details such as device model, Android version and app version, and Google may derive an approximate region (such as country or city) from your internet address. We do not put your name, messages, photos or profile details in them. Turn this off any time in Profile → Help improve Nitick.

When you contact us

If you use our contact form we collect your email address, your message, the topic you chose and, if you give it, your name. These are saved in a Google Sheet that only our team can open.

This website

The website does not use cookies. It uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and measure speed, without cookies and without following you from site to site. It records things like the page you opened, the site that sent you, your browser and device type, and your approximate country. When you press the download button, your browser fetches the app file from our hosting provider, which sees your internet address like any web server does.

4. Permissions the app asks for

Nearby devices (Bluetooth)
To find, be found by, and connect to other Nitick phones. Needed for the radar and for adding friends in person.
Location (Android 11 and older only)
On those versions Android itself will not let any app scan for Bluetooth without the location permission. Nitick does not read, collect or store your location. On Android 12 and newer, Nitick does not ask for it.
Notifications
To tell you about messages and friend requests.
Microphone
Only while you hold the button to record a voice note.
Photos
Nitick does not get access to your photo library. When you choose a picture, the Android photo picker shares only that picture with us.
Background activity and an ongoing notification
So the radar keeps running with the screen off. While it runs, Android shows a small notification.
Internet
To sync, chat and receive notifications.
Installing updates (early-access builds only)
Builds downloaded from our website, not from Google Play, can fetch and install newer versions. Android asks you first.

5. How we use it

Where the law asks for a legal basis (for example in the EU or UK), we rely on: performing our contract with you (running your account and the features you ask for), our legitimate interests (safety, security and improving the app), your consent (optional diagnostics, which you can withdraw in the app, and the permissions you grant), and legal obligations.

We access message content only when needed to investigate a report, keep the service safe, fix a fault you ask us to look at, or comply with the law.

6. Who can see what

If you switch Visible off, you still see who is around, but nearby phones no longer see you.

7. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it with advertisers. We use a small number of service providers who handle data for us, under their own security and privacy terms:

We may also share information if the law requires it, to respond to valid legal requests, or to protect the safety of people or the service. If Nitick is part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to the new owner, who must honour this policy or tell you before anything changes.

8. How long we keep it

9. Your choices and rights

10. Security

Data travels between the app and our servers over encrypted connections, our providers encrypt stored data, and access to the database is restricted by account. No system is perfectly secure, so please choose a strong password and keep it private. Nitick does not have password reset yet.

11. Age limit

Nitick is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we will close it and delete their data. If you think this has happened, please tell us.

12. Where data is processed

Our providers process data in data centres that may be outside your country, including [[SUPABASE REGION]] and the locations used by Google. Where the law requires safeguards for such transfers, we use the ones our providers offer.

13. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
